Everyone has seen the Hi Guy around. If you haven't yet- you will. He's everywhere. Apparently he lives northwest, but he keeps bikes downtown. A couple years ago he pulled a half submerged bike out of the Chicago river and rode it for months. I remember that his seatpost was too big for his seat tube, so he used duct tape to fasten the seat post to the seat tube.
When I first moved to Chicago in 1996 I remember seeing the Hi Guy for the first time on Michigan Avenue holding a big sign that said, "Hi." Now we're old friends. I always stop to check out his ever changing bicycles and his creative uses of complete junk.
Notice in the opening picture how he is using pipe insulation and a used cup for fenders on his present ride. That's the kind of innovation we're going to need when life as we know it ends.
